Tokyo Mushroom Walks 2026: Guided Forest Ecology in the Tama Hills
Two small-group mushroom walks reveal a quieter side of western Tokyo, with local enthusiasts explaining fungi and forest biodiversity in the Tama Hills.
Date and time
Naganuma Park: October 25, 2026, 10:00–14:00. Sakuragaoka Park: November 15, 2026, 10:00–14:00. Reception begins at 09:45. The Naganuma session is cancelled in severe weather; Sakuragaoka proceeds in light rain but is cancelled in severe weather.
Location
Naganuma Park: meet in front of Naganuma Hall at Rokusha-gu, about five minutes on foot from Keio Line Naganuma Station. Sakuragaoka Park: meet in front of Satoyama Club; use Keio or Odakyu Nagayama Station, or Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station, then a Keio bus to Sakuragaoka Koen Nishiguchi.
Highlights
Members of the Tokyo Mushroom Club lead each walk through wooded park terrain, explaining the ecology of wild mushrooms and their role in biodiversity. Groups are deliberately small: 15 participants at Naganuma and 20 at Sakuragaoka.
Booking and admission
Advance registration is required by telephone or the organizer’s online application form. Participation costs ¥600 per person, payable with exact change. The minimum age is elementary school; children of elementary-school age must join with a guardian. Bring lunch, water, rain gear and suitable walking shoes.
How it fits a Tokyo itinerary
This is a distinctive half-day nature activity for travelers who want local expertise beyond central Tokyo. Naganuma pairs naturally with Hachioji or the Takao area, while Sakuragaoka can be combined with the Tama Hills and Old Tama Seiseki Memorial Hall.
