Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony 2026: Tea Culture in Two Historic Settings

  • Aug 20
  • 1 min read

Tokyo’s large-scale public tea gathering returns in two historic settings, with approachable tea sessions—including English-language options—plus Edo crafts and traditional performance.

Date and time

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum: October 24–25, 2026, 10:30–16:00. Hamarikyu Gardens: October 31–November 1, 2026, 10:00–17:30.

Location

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, 3-7-1 Sakuracho, Koganei (about 5 minutes by bus from JR Musashi-Koganei Station, then 5 minutes on foot). Hamarikyu Gardens, 1-1 Hamarikyu-teien, Chuo (5–7 minutes on foot from Shiodome Station).

Highlights

Tea gatherings and outdoor nodate sessions bring multiple schools of tea together. English-language tea is scheduled at both venues. Edo craft demonstrations and workshops are joined by traditional performance; Hamarikyu also hosts a kabuki program on October 31.

Booking and admission

There is no advance application for tea programs: all participation tickets are sold on the day. Sales run 09:30–15:10 at the Open Air Museum and 07:45–15:40 at Hamarikyu. Tea sessions are ¥800; selected workshops are ¥500. Museum admission is free during the event; Hamarikyu garden admission is separate. Detailed sales arrangements will be posted from late August.

How it fits a Tokyo itinerary

Choose Koganei for a slower western-Tokyo day combining tea with restored historic architecture and Koganei Park. Choose Hamarikyu for a central itinerary linking Tsukiji, Shiodome or a Sumida River cruise; its extended garden hours also pair naturally with the moon-viewing program.
