Tea in Hama-rikyu’s Closed Matsu-no-ochaya: An 80th Anniversary Opening
For one day, Hama-rikyu opens its normally closed Matsu-no-ochaya for an intimate tea gathering marking the garden’s 80th anniversary.
Date and time
November 15, 2026, 10:00–16:15. Seven sessions are planned, each lasting about 25 minutes.
Location
Matsu-no-ochaya, Hama-rikyu Gardens, 1-1 Hamarikyu-teien, Chuo City. Shiodome Station is about a 5–7 minute walk, depending on the garden gate used.
Highlights
Enter a teahouse normally closed to visitors, enjoy matcha with an event-exclusive wagashi, and experience an umbrella-themed setting inspired by the garden’s 80th anniversary. Capacity is only 15 people per session.
Booking and admission
The tea gathering costs ¥2,500, plus garden admission (¥300 adults; ¥150 ages 65+). First-come advance applications open October 17 at 10:00 through the organizer-designated external form. If space remains, cash-only same-day tickets may be sold at the teahouse; phone bookings are not accepted. Primary-school-age children and younger cannot participate. Socks are required, and weather may change the program.
How it fits a Tokyo itinerary
Allow 60–90 minutes to include the tidal garden, then continue to Tsukiji, Shiodome or Ginza. It is a rare cultural stop for travelers interested in gardens, tea and shogunal Tokyo.
