Kyudo at Kyu-Shiba-rikyu 2026: Japanese Archery in a Daimyo Garden
For one day, the kyudo range inside Kyu-Shiba-rikyu opens for an instructor-led demonstration and beginner experience, pairing Japanese archery with one of Tokyo’s oldest daimyo gardens.
Date and time
Saturday, November 7, 2026. Demonstration and experience sessions begin at 10:00 and 14:00 and last about 90 minutes. A kyudo history and technique panel display runs 09:00–17:00; last garden admission is 16:30.
Location
Kyu-Shiba-rikyu Gardens, 1-4-1 Kaigan, Minato City. About 1 minute from JR Hamamatsucho Station North Exit or 3 minutes from Daimon Station.
Highlights
Watch the bow’s tsurune sound and formal movements at close range, then practise hikiwake—the drawing phase of Shaho Hassetsu—under experienced instructors. The garden setting adds Edo-period landscape history to the martial-arts experience.
Booking and admission
Advance application is required from October 8 to 18. Each session is limited to 25 participants aged junior-high-school level or older; groups may include up to three people. A lottery applies if oversubscribed, with winners notified by October 31. Participation costs JPY 50 cash for insurance, plus garden admission. Wear socks and comfortable clothing without buttons on the upper garment.
How it fits a Tokyo itinerary
Easy to pair with Hamamatsucho, Zojoji, Tokyo Tower, Takeshiba, or a waterfront walk. Allow about two hours including garden time.
